Trend Spotlight: Mixed Metals

Forget everything you know about matching your metals perfectly.

Elle Décor has released six of the top trends for 2018, according to Pinterest. Using the data from their interior-design-saturated platform, they curated a list of some of the most popular searches, pins and likes to deliver us what we need to know for home décor this year. Among wall art and statement ceilings, mixed metals are here to shake things up and make our accent metals more interesting than ever before.

MIX IT UP

The shimmer and shine of metal accessories and furniture adds dimension to any room with a sleek and sophisticated feel. Instead of focusing on one metallic, it’s time to go all out. Whether you have silver, gold or bronze hardware in your room, opt for a different finish for your accents and details.

MIX IT LIKE A PRO

We took some notes from design expert Chriselle Lim. She has nailed the thought process behind making mixed metals as chic as ever.

  1. Whether you’re decorating a room from scratch or refreshing what you already have, go ahead and identify your focus metal finish. This will give you a metal to rally around, creating a harmonious feel throughout your space.
  2. After choosing your main metal, don’t forget to take inventory of your color palette among the rest of your décor. Chriselle notes her favorite pairings: “Warm metals (like gold, brass, and copper) pair well with warm hues (like reds, browns, and yellows) while cool metals (such as chrome and silver) pair well with cool hues (such as blue, green, and violet).
  3. Finally, when you’ve got all your metals picked out, don’t be afraid to use a variety of textures. Create subtle dimension with matte, hammered and polished finishes on different pieces throughout your space.

Ready to give mixing metals a go? A simple place to start is with decorative figurines or lamp bases. If your existing décor has a warm hue, try a few polished-gold-finished lamp bases and some brass bowls or vases to compliment. If you already have silver hardware in your kitchen, use chrome or black matte light fixtures above your island.
