Meet the 2019 Pantone Color of the Year: Living Coral

Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral. If you’re a designer (or stay up-to-date with home décor and style trends) you know exactly what we’re talking about. For 20 years, the Pantone Color Institute has combed the world looking for the perfect color to represent the year to come. And every December, the highly-anticipated Color of the Year announcement sends designers from various industries into creative overdrive.

At the end of 2018, Pantone announced Living Coral as 2019’s Color of the Year. They refer to it as an “animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge”. With a description like that, you know the designs are going to be epic! We couldn’t wait to find out how designers were planning on implementing the color to their home designs in the new year.

"Color evokes emotion and when I saw Pantone’s selection of Living Color, it made my heart flutter! Twenty years ago, the movie, “Parent Trap” had been re-released and the London residence of one of the characters was a stunning townhome, where the foyer walls were bathed from top-to-bottom in a delicious coral. I was smitten, so much so, a few years later when I did a showcase home, I had the dining room walls combed in something very similar and visitors responded by pronouncing the home to feel quite happy. Not quite orange and not quite pink, it’s a cheerful citrus hue, adding life back to so much of the beige or “greige” we’ve been seeing over the past few years.  It’s an amazing accent to blue and white, mixes unexpectedly well with raspberry, and actually meshes with so many other options, too."

“The 2019 Pantone Color of the Year, 'Living Coral' is warm and optimistic! I love that coral is so seasonless, too. 'Living Coral' looks great paired with warm and cool colors, but I like it best with classic blue-and-white. My clients respond well to coral. Men and women like it equally, too, because it's not overly feminine or masculine. Most recently, I painted my client's guest room (photo credit: Gordon Gregory) coral and paired it with a sapphire blue and white bedding. I pulled the room together with a collection of blue and white porcelain plates and lamps. I'll be surprised if we don't start to see more coral in the home decor marketplace. I've been seeing more reds and a shift towards warmer colors.”

"Every year interior design interprets the Pantone Color of the Year in different ways. 2017, Greenery inspired palm trees, green/white coastal design and green/gold Luxe design. 2018, Ultraviolet inspired the use of lavenders and purples to be combined with the already existing grey to create a more glamorous effect. I'm excited to see what Living Coral will inspire. I'm looking forward to incorporating the corals and peaches with white lacquer and brass."

“Living Coral is the color we’ve been needing as designers. It’s great to see this color being highlighted as one of the colors of the year. It’s going to definitely kickoff 2019 with a bang! This kind of color is perfect for me in the Carolinas. The Carolinas are east coast and southern all rolled up into one, and Living Coral is a fabulous color to work into design. I design with a transitional style and love to pop color into my designs, and you can be sure to see some Living Coral in my Designs coming up in 2019.”

"I was a little skeptical about the new Pantone Color of the Year at first. I do love coral but being that I grew up in the 80's, I kind of got a big overdose of it, if you know what I mean? However, I was just looking at my wedding photos and was reminded that it was my favorite color 30 years ago.  I will definitely re-embrace coral if in the right space. For example, I could see a gorgeous set of velvet coral chairs in a client's home in 2019."

“I was so excited to see that Living Coral is the Pantone 2019 Color of the Year! Truly, it immediately put a smile on my face when I read the announcement. That is what I call a successful color! My job as a designer is to make my client feel good and live well so if I can bring in this color to evoke that feel good feeling then I say yes please to Living Coral! I would bring this color in on an accent piece of furniture- a coffee table, a console, a bathroom vanity, what a punch that would be! Paired with navy or green or even gray, Living Coral makes a great accent in a fabric too. Want to really be bold, paint Living Coral on your ceiling! Married with a bright white trim this would be a beautifully crisp combination. As you can tell, I am quite excited to bring Living Coral into my designs in 2019!”
